What is the Difference Between an Allergy and a Sensitivity?
An allergic reaction to a food or other substance (like dust mites, animal dander and pollens) is a lifelong immune response. These reactions can be immediate and serious. Symptoms can range from hives to difficulty breathing and could be a medical emergency. Reactions can involve diarrhoea, skin rashes, wheezing, abdominal cramping, swelling, hives, or the most severe reaction, anaphylaxis. Some of the most common foods that cause allergies are peanuts, shellfish, eggs, and dairy.
What is food intolerance/ sensitivity?
Intolerance to certain foods can mean that you may have trouble digesting that food item well. These effects may occur some days after eating the foods. Intolerances can happen for numerous reasons, the two most common are: The body may be lacking the essential digestive enzymes to thoroughly digest a certain food. This can lead to the numerous digestive/bodily symptoms seen above. The food sensitivity may even occur from excess consumption or overexposure to a certain food.
When you have difficulty digesting foods, for whatever reason, you may absorb the nutrients less well from your diet and that can lead to nutrient deficiencies and health problems.
How is the Test Done?
To test for allergies, blood must be taken from the arm. To test for sensitivities only a finger prick is needed to collect the blood.
